Session Details
Since the end of the Round of 2012, starting with the Final Issue Reporton New gTLD Subsequent Procedures, aka SubPro, it has represented the promise of a program with the issues defined in the GNSO charter for the New GTLD Subsequent Procedures Policy Development Process (PDP) fixed. Over the course of the last few years, ALAC has worked with the GNSO and ALAC has submitted advice to the Board on issues of great concern regarding the Next Round; issues that some thought needed to be solved before the New gTLD program was initiated. Over the years, various solutions have been developed to address those issues and At-Large and ALAC have been given assurance that the issues were being resolved. In some cases, At-Large members have worked in small teams and IRTs and have contributed to the efforts to prepare for the New gTLD Program: Next Round to respond to the shortcomings of the previous round.
This session aims to explore whether the expectations, or ‘promises’, made within ICANN during the development and implementation of the New gTLD Program are being met, particularly in terms of their social impact and alignment with the global public interest. This discussion is particularly timely as we approach the next Applicant Guidebook (AGB) revision. Based on the community’s understanding of the successes and failures of the ongoing 2012 round, the discussions during the New gTLD Subsequent Procedures (SubPro) Policy Development Process on how the next round would fix everything, and the status of the current implementation of the New gTLD Round, can we identify gaps that should be dealt with before it is too late? Alternatively, we will learn that all is going well and will be ready with the solutions by the time the program kicks off. We look forward to welcoming the ICANN Community to this session.
